(1483-1546) Martin Luther was a German leader of the Protestant Reformation.  He was known as a gifted, stirring preacher who related the Scriptures to the lives of ordinary men.  His Ninety-five Theses, an attack on the Roman Catholic Church, provided the impetus for the Protestant Reformation.  An accomplished linguist, he translated the Bible from Greek into German.
